Very large skin tag: what to know

Skin tags are soft growths that often hang from a narrow base and develop where skin or clothing rubs. A larger one may catch on jewellery, collars, or shaving tools, leading to tenderness, bleeding, or surface irritation. Colour, firmness, a broad base, rapid enlargement, ulceration, or bleeding without friction makes the diagnosis less certain. A clinician may inspect it closely and decide whether testing is needed rather than assuming every growth is a skin tag.

Do not tie off, cut, burn, or apply unlabelled removal chemicals at home. These approaches can cause bleeding, infection, scarring, or delay assessment of a different lesion.

Arrange an examination, especially if the growth is new, changing, painful, or repeatedly snagged. Keep clothing from rubbing it and avoid picking at a crust. If removal is appropriate, the clinician may discuss snip or shave removal, electrosurgery, or cryotherapy depending on its size, base, location, and appearance. Ask how the area will be cared for while it heals and whether the removed tissue will be assessed.

Seek prompt medical review for rapid growth, spontaneous bleeding, persistent pain, marked colour change, an irregular surface, ulceration, or a lesion that feels hard and fixed. Get urgent help for bleeding that does not stop with firm direct pressure. These signs do not establish cancer, but they make an in-person assessment more important.
