Very large pores on the face: what to know

Short answer
Very large-looking facial pores are usually influenced by oil, congestion, skin elasticity, and sun exposure; they can be softened in appearance but cannot be erased by skincare.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why pores may look larger
Pores are openings around hair follicles and oil glands. They may appear more visible when oil and dead skin collect at the opening, when acne causes congestion, or when the surrounding skin loses firmness. Sun exposure can contribute to texture and changes in elasticity, making openings stand out. Lighting, makeup, dehydration, and close-up mirrors can also exaggerate their appearance. Large-looking pores alone do not prove that you have acne or sun-damaged skin.
A clinician can distinguish open comedones, scars, active inflammation, and ordinary pore visibility. That distinction affects whether a topical routine or a procedure is sensible.
Ways to improve the appearance
Cleanse gently, avoid abrasive scrubs and squeezing, and choose products labelled non-comedogenic if you are prone to congestion. Daily broad-spectrum sunscreen helps limit further sun-related texture change. A clinician may recommend topical retinoids to support cell turnover and reduce blocked pores; they can irritate at first and need careful use. Microneedling is a procedure sometimes considered for texture, but suitability depends on active acne, skin sensitivity, pigmentation risk, and the cause of the uneven surface.
When to seek care
Book an assessment if enlarged-looking pores are accompanied by painful spots, persistent blackheads, scars, sudden texture change, or significant distress. Seek prompt care for a rapidly changing lesion, marked swelling, or a painful area that does not settle. A treatment plan should address the underlying congestion or sun-related change rather than promise pore removal.
Questions for your doctor
Ask: Is this mainly oil, congestion, acne, scarring, or sun-related texture? Would a topical retinoid suit my skin? How should I introduce it and manage irritation? Could microneedling help my specific texture, and what pigment or recovery concerns should we discuss?

No skincare product can erase or permanently close normal pores, but congestion and surrounding texture can sometimes be improved.
Does scrubbing make pores smaller?
Harsh scrubbing can irritate skin and make texture look worse; gentle cleansing is safer.
