What should you know about very hoarse cough?

A cold, acute bronchitis, or another viral infection can inflame the throat and voice box, making the cough sound rough or barking. Allergic rhinitis may cause drainage that irritates the throat. Acid reflux can irritate the voice box, particularly when symptoms are worse after meals or on waking.

Cough with wheeze, chest tightness, or triggers such as exercise or dust may be assessed in relation to asthma. A cough that brings up repeated mucus or lasts a long time has a wider range of possible causes, including chronic cough or bronchiectasis. In young children, bronchiolitis needs careful attention to breathing and feeding.

Rest your voice, avoid smoke and other airway irritants, and take warm fluids if they soothe your throat. Humidified air may feel helpful, but avoid burns from steam. Honey may soothe a cough for adults and children over one year; never give honey to an infant under one year.

Treat fever or discomfort only with medicines suitable for you, following the label or professional advice. Arrange an assessment if the cough is worsening, interferes with sleep or eating, follows choking, or does not settle as expected.

Seek urgent care for difficulty breathing, blue or grey lips, inability to swallow saliva, severe drowsiness, chest pain, coughing blood, or a high-pitched harsh sound when breathing in. In a child, urgent review is needed for ribs pulling in, pauses in breathing, or inability to feed.

Prompt medical advice is also sensible when hoarseness persists, recurs without a clear infection, or occurs with unexplained weight loss, a neck lump, or worsening swallowing difficulty.

Ask: Is the sound coming from the throat or chest? Could reflux, allergy, asthma, or infection be contributing? Do I need an examination or breathing tests? Which cough treatments are safe with my other medicines?
