What should you know about very dry cracked feet?

Short answer
Very dry cracked feet need regular moisturising, gentle cleansing, protection from friction, and medical assessment when cracks are deep, painful, infected, or linked with other symptoms.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Daily focus
- Moisturise after washing and protect feet from pressure and rubbing.
- Do not do
- Do not cut, aggressively file, or ignore an infected-looking crack.
Why feet become dry and split
Dry skin loses flexibility and can thicken in areas exposed to pressure, especially the heels and balls of the feet. Walking and standing then pull the stiff surface apart, producing fissures that sting or bleed. Athlete’s foot may contribute when there is peeling, scaling, or itch, particularly between the toes. Cracked skin can also accompany dermatitis or other conditions, so repeated or widespread changes deserve a closer look.
A simple foot-care routine
Wash with lukewarm water and a gentle cleanser, then dry carefully. Apply an emollient soon afterwards and repeat before bed, concentrating on dry soles and heels while avoiding heavy product between the toes. Wear breathable socks and supportive shoes that reduce rubbing. A smooth foot file may reduce thick skin after washing, but never cut the skin or file an open fissure. Stop any product that burns and seek advice if the skin is broken.
Signs you need medical advice
Arrange prompt care for increasing redness, warmth, swelling, pus, fever, or pain that makes walking difficult. Seek an assessment for cracks that are deep, repeatedly bleed, spread beyond the heels, or remain despite consistent care. If you have diabetes, poor circulation, or reduced sensation, ask for advice early about any break in the skin.
What to ask
Could athlete’s foot or another condition be causing the dryness? Which emollient and cleansing routine should I use? Is a foot file appropriate for me? How should I protect a bleeding fissure, and which changes mean I need urgent care?

Questions people ask
Why do my feet stay dry even when I moisturise?
Ongoing pressure, friction, bathing habits, fungal infection, or another skin condition may be maintaining the dryness; persistent symptoms merit assessment.
Can cracked feet become infected?
Yes. Open fissures can allow germs in, especially when there is warmth, swelling, increasing pain, pus, or spreading redness.
