Very dark coloured poop: what to know

Dark foods, iron, and some stomach remedies can colour bowel movements. Black, sticky, tar-like poop is more concerning because blood from the upper digestive tract can become black during digestion. Stomach or bowel symptoms can also occur alongside dehydration or heat exhaustion, although those conditions do not by themselves explain every black stool. Hepatitis A and Hepatitis B are more often associated with dark urine, pale stool, jaundice, nausea, or abdominal discomfort than with tarry black poop. The full pattern matters.

Write down recent foods, supplements, medicines, fluid intake, and the stool’s texture. Rehydrate gradually if you have been sweating, vomiting, or having diarrhoea and can safely drink. Do not rely on colour alone to diagnose liver disease, and do not stop prescribed medicine without guidance. Arrange medical advice for unexplained, repeated, or tar-like dark stool, particularly when urine is also dark or your eyes and skin look yellow.

Go to urgent care for black stool with faintness, severe weakness, severe abdominal pain, vomiting blood, coffee-ground vomit, confusion, or breathlessness. Seek prompt assessment for yellow skin or eyes, very dark urine, pale stools, persistent vomiting, or inability to drink. Heat exposure with weakness, confusion, or collapse also needs emergency help because heat illness can worsen quickly.

Ask whether the appearance suggests digestive bleeding, dehydration, medication staining, or a liver-related problem. Share any dark urine, jaundice, fever, pain, diarrhoea, recent travel, heat exposure, and medicine changes so the clinician can choose appropriate tests.
