Short answer

Vertigo prevention starts with identifying your personal triggers, supporting hydration and regular meals, treating underlying conditions, and reducing the chance of falls.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What prevention can and cannot do

Prevention is easier when you know whether spinning follows head movement, migraine triggers, an ear problem, missed meals, heat, dehydration, or a medicine. A diary can reveal patterns such as rolling in bed, looking upward, bright light, poor sleep, or particular foods. Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo may need a clinician-guided repositioning manoeuvre, while migraine-related vertigo may improve when personal migraine triggers are addressed. Meniere's disease and middle-ear infection need condition-specific advice.

Not every attack can be prevented, and a new pattern should not be managed only with lifestyle changes. Diagnosis is especially useful when vertigo affects hearing, walking, work, or sleep.

Build a safer routine

Drink regularly, avoid long gaps between meals, protect sleep, and rise slowly from bed or a chair. Turn your head gently until you know what movements trigger symptoms. Keep floors clear, use non-slip footwear, add bathroom support if needed, and avoid driving, ladders, or water hazards when unsteady. Review medicines with a clinician rather than stopping them yourself. If a specific exercise or Epley manoeuvre is recommended, learn the correct technique and ask when to pause it.

When prevention is not enough

Seek emergency care for sudden weakness, numbness, speech difficulty, severe new headache, fainting, loss of vision, chest pain, or inability to walk. Arrange prompt assessment for new or persistent vertigo, repeated falls, severe vomiting, new hearing loss, ear discharge, or a major change in your usual pattern. A fall with head injury also needs medical advice, even if the spinning settles.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which triggers are worth avoiding, whether your pattern suggests positional vertigo, migraine, or an ear disorder, whether balance exercises could help, and how to make your home and work setting safer.

Questions people ask

Can drinking more water prevent every vertigo attack?

Good hydration may reduce dizziness related to fluid loss, but it will not prevent every cause of true vertigo.

Should I avoid all head movement?

Avoid risky movements during an episode, but prolonged restriction can make daily life harder; ask a clinician whether guided balance exercises are suitable.
