Vertigo in women

Vertigo means an illusion of movement, such as spinning, tilting, or being pulled sideways. In women, symptoms may appear alongside menstrual or pregnancy-related changes, menopause, migraine, sleep disruption, or missed meals, but these clues do not establish a cause on their own. Positional vertigo often follows a particular head movement. Meniere's disease may involve episodes with ear pressure, ringing, or changing hearing. An ear infection can cause pain, discharge, or reduced hearing.

Note whether symptoms follow a cycle, begin after a new medicine, or occur with headache, light sensitivity, visual symptoms, or hearing changes. This gives a clinician useful information without assuming that every dizzy spell is hormonal.

Sit or lie down immediately, focus on a fixed point if that helps, and avoid driving or heights until balance is normal. Stand in stages, keep water and a small snack available, and protect your home from trip hazards. Record the time, position, possible cycle or pregnancy context, headache features, ear symptoms, and what relieved the episode. A clinician can then decide whether balance testing, hearing assessment, blood tests, or another review is appropriate.

Seek emergency care for sudden trouble speaking, one-sided weakness or numbness, new severe headache, fainting, loss of vision, severe chest symptoms, or inability to walk safely. Arrange prompt medical review for repeated attacks, new hearing loss, severe ear pain, persistent vomiting, or vertigo after a head injury. Pregnancy, heavy bleeding, or symptoms of high blood pressure should be discussed urgently with the maternity team.

Ask whether the timing suggests migraine, positional vertigo, an ear disorder, or another issue; whether hormones, pregnancy, or a medicine may be contributing; and which prevention or treatment plan fits your health history.
