Vertigo in pregnancy treatment

A clinician first separates true vertigo from faintness or general unsteadiness. They may review blood pressure, hydration, meals, medicines, hearing, eye movements, balance, and pregnancy symptoms. Brief spinning brought on by rolling in bed can suggest benign paroxysmal positional vertigo. Ear discomfort or hearing changes may suggest middle-ear infection or another inner-ear problem; migraine may cause dizziness with light or sound sensitivity.

The cause matters because treatment may involve correcting fluids or meals, treating an ear problem, managing migraine triggers, or using a supervised repositioning technique. Medication choices require an individual review in pregnancy, including non-prescription products.

Stop and sit somewhere safe when spinning starts. Move your head slowly, keep walkways clear, use handrails, and ask someone to accompany you on stairs or outdoors if balance is unreliable. Keep a diary of the trigger, position, duration, nausea, headache, hearing symptoms, and pregnancy symptoms. Drink regularly and avoid skipping meals when possible. Do not borrow anti-dizziness medicine or practise the Epley manoeuvre from a video without checking that it is appropriate for you.

Get urgent help for sudden weakness, facial drooping, speech difficulty, new severe headache, fainting, chest pain, breathing difficulty, persistent vomiting, inability to stand, or a significant fall. During pregnancy, contact your maternity service urgently for bleeding, severe abdominal pain, fluid leakage, reduced fetal movement, or symptoms that may accompany high blood pressure. Arrange a prompt review when vertigo is new, recurring, worsening, or paired with hearing loss or severe ear pain.

Ask what cause is most consistent with your pattern, whether an ear or neurological examination is needed, which medicines are acceptable at your gestation, and whether a physiotherapist or ear specialist should supervise positional treatment.
