What should you know about vertebroplasty?

After imaging identifies a suitable vertebral compression fracture, the clinician guides a needle through the skin into the affected vertebra. Bone cement is then delivered under imaging control. The aim is to reinforce the collapsed area; it does not restore every change caused by the fracture or treat the underlying bone weakness by itself. A vertebral compression fracture can arise after reduced bone strength or injury, so the cause also needs attention.

The procedure may use local anaesthesia with sedation or another anaesthesia plan. Potential concerns include cement leakage, infection, bleeding, allergic reaction, or irritation of nearby nerves. Your clinician weighs these against your symptoms and imaging.

Tell the team about blood-thinning medicines, allergies, infection, pregnancy possibility, and breathing or heart conditions. Follow instructions about fasting and medicines. Arrange transport if sedation is used. Afterward, follow wound and activity instructions, keep follow-up appointments, and ask how bone health, posture, lifting, and physiotherapy should be addressed. Kyphoplasty is another cement-augmentation option that may be discussed.

Contact the care team for increasing wound redness, drainage, fever, uncontrolled pain, or new symptoms after the procedure. Seek emergency help for sudden leg weakness, new loss of bladder or bowel control, chest pain, severe shortness of breath, or collapse.

Ask whether the fracture is suitable, what imaging shows, and whether non-procedural care or kyphoplasty would fit your situation. Discuss the cement material, anaesthesia, medication changes, expected activity, nerve-related warning signs, and how bone fragility will be treated afterward.
