Venous Lake Lip Removal: What to Know

A venous lake is a widened superficial vein that may appear blue, purple, or red on the lip. Removal is not automatically necessary: some spots cause no symptoms, while others catch on teeth, bleed, or are a cosmetic concern. A clinician needs to distinguish it from a bruise, cyst, pigmented mark, or another vascular lesion before selecting a procedure.

The assessment may include gentle examination of compressibility, surface, borders, and blood flow behaviour. The provider can also consider lip movement, nearby teeth, previous trauma, and whether the lesion is shallow or extends deeper into the tissue.

Discuss the goal clearly: reducing colour, preventing recurrent bleeding, improving comfort, or changing the appearance. Electrosurgery may be considered for a suitable lesion; it uses controlled energy to treat targeted tissue. Other approaches may be selected depending on anatomy and the clinician’s assessment.

Before treatment, ask about local anaesthetic, expected swelling, wound care, eating restrictions, scarring or colour change, and the possibility that more than one visit may be needed. Do not attempt home removal or apply caustic products to the lip.

Have the spot assessed promptly if it grows, becomes painful or firm, ulcerates, or bleeds repeatedly. After a procedure, contact the treating team for worsening swelling, increasing pain, spreading redness, pus, fever, or bleeding that does not settle with direct pressure. Seek emergency help for breathing or swallowing difficulty.

Ask how certain the diagnosis is, which method fits the lesion, how the lip may look while healing, and how to protect the site from biting or sun exposure. Ask who to contact if bleeding or swelling occurs after treatment.
