Venous Lake Inside the Mouth: What to Know

Inside the mouth, a venous lake may appear blue, violet, or reddish and may feel soft when touched. Its colour can look deeper when blood pools in the widened vessel. It might be noticed on the inner lip or another area of oral lining. Because mouth tissues can develop bruises, irritation, cysts, and other lesions, colour alone cannot confirm the diagnosis.

A dental clinician, oral medicine specialist, or dermatologist may examine the spot and the surrounding tissue. They may ask about biting, dental appliances, tobacco or irritant exposure, recent dental work, duration, and episodes of bleeding.

Do not puncture, scrape, or repeatedly press the area. Avoid chewing directly over it and reduce contact with sharp tooth edges or a poorly fitting appliance where possible. Keep track of changes in size, colour, surface, and bleeding, and arrange an examination when the diagnosis is uncertain.

If removal is appropriate, treatment depends on the lesion’s depth, exact site, and relationship to nearby oral structures. Electrosurgery may be discussed as one possible treatment after an in-person assessment.

Arrange prompt review for a sore that persists, a lump that enlarges, repeated bleeding, new pain, numbness, or difficulty eating. Seek urgent care if bleeding continues despite firm pressure, or if rapid swelling interferes with swallowing, speaking, or breathing.
