A lump near a neck vein: what should you know?

A neck lump may be a reactive lymph node after an infection, a thyroid nodule, a cyst, an inflamed area or a change involving a vein or other blood vessel. Some cancers can also present with a neck lump, including head and neck cancer, lymphoma, thyroid cancer or cancer of unknown primary. A neck lump is a presentation of these conditions in some people; it does not show which cause is present.

Features such as firmness, growth, persistence, pain, movement under the skin, voice change, swallowing difficulty and weight change help guide assessment. The position beside a visible vein does not identify the cause by itself.

Arrange a clinical review for a new, persistent or enlarging lump. The clinician may examine your mouth, throat, thyroid and lymph-node areas, then choose an ultrasound or other imaging. If tissue is needed, a needle sample or biopsy may be discussed. Do not repeatedly squeeze or massage the lump.

Write down when you first noticed it, whether it changes with posture or straining, and any recent infection, dental problem or injury. Bring a list of medicines and describe smoking or alcohol exposure honestly because these details can affect the assessment.

Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, inability to swallow saliva, rapidly increasing swelling, severe bleeding or faintness. Arrange prompt medical assessment for a hard or fixed lump, a lump that keeps growing, persistent hoarseness, coughing blood, night sweats or unexplained weight loss.

Ask what structures are beneath the lump, which examination or scan is appropriate, and whether a biopsy is needed. Ask what symptoms should trigger faster review and when you should expect the next result or appointment.
