VDRL blood test meaning: what the result can show

A non-reactive result means the test did not detect the antibody pattern it was looking for. Very early infection, or a later stage, can sometimes require further assessment if symptoms or an exposure concern remain.

A reactive result does not by itself prove syphilis. Other infections and immune conditions can sometimes produce a reactive screening result, so a clinician may arrange a treponemal test and review your examination, history, and any previous treatment. The VDRL may also be used to follow the response after treatment.

Contact the clinician who requested the test so the result can be interpreted alongside your reason for testing. Avoid sexual contact or use barriers until you have received clear advice, particularly if syphilis is being investigated. Do not start or stop antibiotics without medical guidance.

Tell the clinician about symptoms, recent partners, pregnancy, previous syphilis treatment, and medicines. They may recommend confirmatory blood tests, examination, testing for other sexually transmitted infections, or partner notification support.
