VBAC after two C-sections: planning questions

Short answer

After two C-sections, VBAC is an individual decision that depends on your uterine scars, the current pregnancy, and a hospital plan for continuous monitoring and urgent surgery.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Main records
Both operative reports help clarify the uterine scars.
Birth setting
Planned labour needs continuous assessment and surgical backup.
Decision
The current pregnancy is assessed alongside your previous births.

The assessment is more than a birth count

Your clinician will seek the operative reports from both caesareans. The incision through the uterus, any extension or complication, and other uterine surgery can affect the options. They will also consider why the surgeries happened, whether you have had a vaginal birth, the placenta's location, the baby's position and your health now.

If labour is planned, monitoring and access to an operating theatre are part of the safety arrangement. A repeat Caesarean Section may be recommended if the overall assessment makes labour unsuitable.

Steps before choosing a route

Book a detailed antenatal discussion and bring previous hospital records. Ask how spontaneous labour would be managed, whether induction is offered in your situation, and what would prompt a change in plan. Discuss pain relief, who will be present, and how the baby's wellbeing will be checked.

Your preference matters, but it should be considered alongside the scar findings and the services available where you plan to give birth.

Get assessed without delay

Call your maternity unit for vaginal bleeding, leaking fluid, regular contractions or reduced fetal movement. Seek emergency help for heavy bleeding, faintness or severe abdominal pain. During labour, tell the team about persistent pain between contractions or any sudden change in how you feel.

Questions worth asking

Can you review both operative reports with me? Are there findings that make VBAC unsuitable? How would induction alter the plan? What monitoring is available, and how quickly could an emergency caesarean be performed?

Questions people ask

Is VBAC possible after two C-sections?

It may be considered for some people after a specialist review, while others may be advised to have a planned repeat caesarean.

Does a previous vaginal birth change the discussion?

It can be relevant to the overall assessment, but it does not replace review of the uterine scars and current pregnancy.
