Vasovagal syncope during pregnancy: treatment and safety

Short answer
Treatment for vasovagal syncope during pregnancy focuses on preventing falls, removing triggers, restoring circulation, and checking other causes of fainting.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Common warning signs
- Warmth, nausea, sweating, dizziness, or visual dimming
- Safe first position
- Lie on your side or sit with support
- Main priority
- Prevent a fall and assess the cause
What it means
A vasovagal episode happens when the nervous system briefly lowers blood pressure and may slow the heartbeat. Pregnancy can make standing, overheating, prolonged waiting, or lying flat on the back uncomfortable, and fainting can injure you or your pregnancy if you fall. Warning sensations may include warmth, nausea, sweating, light-headedness, blurred vision, or muffled hearing. A faint should not automatically be attributed to pregnancy; anaemia, dehydration, low blood sugar, and heart-rhythm problems can also need assessment.
What to do during an episode
At the first warning, sit or lie on your side in a safe place and ask someone to stay with you. Loosen tight clothing, keep the room cool, and avoid standing quickly. Once fully alert, take small sips of fluid if you can swallow safely and follow your maternity clinician’s advice about regular meals. Your clinician may review medicines, blood pressure, blood count, hydration, and heart rhythm. Do not drive, climb, or bathe alone until the cause and safety plan are clear.
When to seek care
Seek urgent help if you faint during pregnancy and have chest pain, trouble breathing, a severe headache, seizure-like movements, significant injury, vaginal bleeding, abdominal pain, persistent confusion, or a racing or irregular heartbeat. Arrange prompt medical review for a first faint, repeated episodes, fainting during exertion, or an episode without warning. Call emergency services if you remain unresponsive or cannot breathe normally.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether you need a blood count, glucose check, blood-pressure measurements, or an electrocardiogram; which sleeping position is suitable for you; how much fluid is appropriate; and when it is safe to return to work, exercise, driving, or procedures.

Questions people ask
Can pregnancy cause vasovagal syncope?
Pregnancy can make some triggers more likely, but a faint still deserves assessment when it is new, severe, repeated, or unexplained.
What treatment is used after a pregnancy-related faint?
Care may include trigger avoidance, hydration and meal planning, medication review, injury checks, and tests for anaemia, dehydration, low blood sugar, or rhythm problems.
