What should you know about vasospastic angina causes?

Short answer
Vasospastic angina is caused by a temporary tightening of a heart artery that reduces blood flow.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Main mechanism
- Temporary contraction of a coronary artery
- Pattern
- May occur at rest or overnight
- Key safety point
- Persistent or severe chest symptoms need emergency help
How the spasm develops
The artery supplying the heart muscle briefly narrows because its muscular wall contracts. This can happen even when fixed fatty narrowing is not the main problem. Episodes may occur at rest, often overnight or in the early morning, rather than only during exertion.
Triggers can include smoking, cold exposure, emotional stress and some medicines or recreational drugs. High blood pressure and other blood-vessel risks may add to overall heart risk, but a trigger is not always found. Chest tightness can have many causes, so symptoms alone cannot confirm the diagnosis.
What to do next
Arrange medical assessment for recurring chest discomfort, particularly if it appears at rest or follows a repeated pattern. A clinician may use an ECG, blood tests and other heart investigations to assess blood flow and exclude a heart attack or another cause.
Do not smoke, avoid non-prescribed stimulants and tell your clinician about every medicine or supplement. Treatment may include medicines that relax the artery; take them exactly as prescribed and do not stop heart medicines without advice. Managing blood pressure and cholesterol can support wider cardiovascular care.
When to seek urgent care
Call emergency services for new, severe or persistent chest pressure, or discomfort with sweating, nausea, breathlessness, fainting or pain spreading to the arm, jaw or back. Do this even if the episode resembles previous spasms, because a heart attack can feel similar.
If prescribed rescue medicine does not relieve symptoms as directed, seek emergency help. Do not drive yourself when serious heart symptoms are possible.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which triggers may apply to you, whether you need an ECG or specialist assessment, how to use rescue medicine, and how blood pressure or cholesterol treatment fits your plan.

Questions people ask
Is vasospastic angina the same as ordinary angina?
It is a form of angina, but the immediate mechanism is a temporary artery spasm rather than exertion-related demand alone.
Can stress cause a coronary artery spasm?
Emotional stress can be a trigger for some people, alongside factors such as cold exposure and smoking. A trigger is not present in every episode.
