Short answer

During pregnancy, varicella non-immunity means you may lack protection against chickenpox, so report exposure promptly and seek personalised medical advice.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Meaning
Reliable protection against varicella has not been confirmed.
After exposure
Contact your maternity team or clinician promptly with the exposure date.
Rash or fever
Seek same-day medical advice and mention the possible exposure.

What this means in pregnancy

Varicella, also called chickenpox, is a viral infection that often produces fever and an itchy rash with blisters. A non-immune result means there is no reliable evidence that you are protected, whether because you have not had chickenpox, have no documented vaccination, or have an uncertain test result. It does not confirm that you are infected. Shingles is a different presentation of the same virus and usually occurs after earlier infection.

Pregnancy changes how exposure should be managed because both your health and the developing baby need to be considered. Do not rely on a home decision about immunity or treatment. Keep a record of the contact, the other person’s illness, and the date it happened for the clinician.

What to do after exposure

Call your maternity team, GP or another qualified clinician promptly if you have been exposed to chickenpox or shingles. State that you are pregnant, that you may be varicella non-immune, and when the contact occurred. They can review your history and test results and decide whether post-exposure treatment or monitoring is appropriate.

Chickenpox vaccination is generally planned outside pregnancy, so ask your clinician about the safest timing rather than arranging it yourself. Avoid close contact with people who have chickenpox or a fresh shingles rash until you receive individual advice. If a rash develops, do not start antiviral treatment or antihistamine treatment without speaking with a clinician about pregnancy-appropriate options.

When to seek care

Seek same-day medical advice if fever, an unexplained rash, or new skin blisters develop during pregnancy, particularly after a known exposure. Tell the service before attending in person so they can reduce contact with other vulnerable people. Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, severe headache, confusion, marked drowsiness, or a rapidly worsening illness. A clinician can assess the rash and coordinate pregnancy care.

Questions for your doctor

Ask: How was my immunity assessed? What counts as a significant exposure? Should I have testing or preventive treatment now? Which symptoms require same-day review? When could chickenpox vaccination be considered after pregnancy, and how should close household contacts reduce my exposure risk?

What should I do if I develop a rash?

Contact your maternity team or clinician the same day, mention possible varicella exposure, and call before attending a clinic.
