What should you know about vaporub for cough?

Mentholated rubs create a cooling or warming sensation that may make breathing and coughing feel more comfortable. This is symptom relief, not treatment of infection, airway inflammation or reflux. A cough may come from a common cold, acute bronchitis, allergic rhinitis, asthma, acid reflux or another condition.

Use only the product's labelled route and age guidance. Never swallow a topical rub, put it in the nose or apply it to broken skin. Camphor-containing products can be dangerous if swallowed, especially by children. Keep the container out of children's reach.

Follow the label, wash your hands after application and stop if you develop a rash, burning or breathing irritation. Warm drinks, rest and avoiding smoke or vape aerosol may ease throat irritation. For a child, check the label carefully and ask a pharmacist before using a cough product.

Notice whether the cough is dry or phlegmy, when it occurs, and whether wheeze, fever, heartburn or nasal symptoms accompany it. This pattern helps distinguish causes. Do not use vaporub to delay review of a cough that is worsening or not settling.

Get urgent help for severe breathlessness, blue or grey lips, chest pain, coughing blood, confusion or sudden worsening. Arrange medical assessment for wheezing, high fever, a cough in a very young child, or a cough that persists or repeatedly returns. Asthma and bronchiectasis need an individual management plan.
