UTI and muscle aches: what to know

A bladder infection usually causes burning, urgency, frequent urination or discomfort low in the abdomen. Generalised aches may accompany fever or the immune response, but influenza, COVID-19, dengue fever, malaria and other conditions can cause them too. Pain focused in one side or the back, especially with fever, chills, nausea or urinary symptoms, raises concern for kidney involvement. Muscle pain after exertion or with longer-lasting tiredness may have a different explanation, such as fibromyalgia, thyroid disease or recovery after infection.

Arrange medical advice when aches occur with new urinary symptoms, fever or feeling generally unwell. Rest, drink fluids as tolerated, and note your temperature, urine changes, pain location and any recent travel, insect exposure or unusual exertion. Use only medicines suitable for you and follow package or clinician instructions. Avoid leftover antibiotics. A clinician may examine you and request urine testing to decide whether a UTI is present and whether another illness needs attention.

Seek urgent care for severe weakness, confusion, fainting, breathing difficulty, repeated vomiting, severe back or side pain, very little urine, or a rapidly worsening feverish illness. Get prompt advice after travel to a malaria-risk area, after a significant tick or animal exposure, or if you are pregnant or have reduced immunity.
