Can a UTI cause chills without fever?

A single normal temperature does not rule out infection. Chills with burning, urgency, frequent urination, lower abdominal discomfort, or cloudy urine may fit a urinary infection. Flank pain, nausea, vomiting, or later fever raises concern for kidney involvement. Influenza, pneumonia, dengue fever, or malaria can cause chills without fever at the time you check, depending on the stage of illness and recent exposures. The pattern matters more than one temperature reading.

Check your temperature again if chills return and write down urinary, respiratory, stomach, or pain symptoms. Contact a clinician promptly if chills continue or accompany urinary symptoms, particularly if you are pregnant, older, immunocompromised, or have kidney disease. Drink normally if able, rest, and avoid leftover antibiotics. A urine test may help distinguish infection from other causes.

Seek emergency care for confusion, fainting, severe weakness, trouble breathing, repeated vomiting, inability to pass urine, or rapidly worsening flank pain. Do so even without fever. Recent travel or mosquito exposure with marked illness also warrants prompt assessment for infections that need specific testing.

Ask whether your symptoms warrant a urine test or further examination despite no fever. Tell the clinician about temperature readings, medicines that lower fever, travel, mosquito exposure, cough, breathlessness, diarrhoea, pregnancy, and the timing of chills.
