A clinician may check a urine sample and decide whether treatment is appropriate. Do not use leftover antibiotics.

Seek urgent medical care for cloudy urine with fever or chills, pain in the flank or back, vomiting, confusion, marked weakness, or difficulty passing urine. These features can accompany a kidney infection or a more serious illness. Pregnancy, childhood, older age, diabetes, kidney disease, or a weakened immune system lowers the threshold for prompt assessment.
