USPSTF breast cancer screening: what to know

Screening is intended for people without breast symptoms. Mammography creates images that may reveal a mass, distortion, or small areas of calcium. An abnormal screening image does not establish breast cancer; it signals that more assessment may be useful. The next step can include additional imaging or a breast biopsy, depending on the finding.

Screening decisions are personal. Age, family history, previous breast findings, breast density, inherited risk, and preferences can change the balance of benefits and drawbacks. A screening plan should be reviewed when your health or risk factors change.

Bring information about prior mammograms, breast procedures, medicines, pregnancy possibility, and family cancer history. Ask where earlier images are stored so they can be compared. If you notice a new breast or underarm change, tell the clinician rather than waiting for routine screening; symptoms may need diagnostic assessment.

If an image is called back, ask what was seen and whether the next appointment is for a closer image, ultrasound, MRI, or tissue sampling. Follow-up does not mean that cancer has been confirmed.

Arrange a clinical assessment for a new breast lump, skin dimpling, nipple inversion, bloody discharge, or a persistent one-sided change. Seek urgent help for severe breast redness with fever or rapidly worsening swelling. These symptoms have several possible causes, and a symptom alone does not determine whether cancer is present.
