What should you know about using belly fat for breast reconstruction?

A surgeon moves a flap of skin and fat, sometimes with its blood vessels, from the lower abdomen to the chest and reconnects the circulation using microsurgery. The tissue can be shaped to resemble a breast. This approach may be considered after mastectomy or in selected delayed reconstructions. It is major surgery, and suitability depends on abdominal tissue, previous operations, general health, and the planned cancer treatment.

Discuss whether abdominal tissue is suitable and whether an implant or tissue expander would offer a better option. Ask about scars, recovery, activity restrictions, blood-clot prevention, and how radiotherapy could affect timing or healing. Tell the team about smoking, medicines, previous abdominal surgery, and conditions that affect blood vessels or wound healing. Arrange practical help during the early recovery period.

After surgery, contact the reconstruction team urgently for increasing pain, swelling, redness, drainage, fever, wound separation, a cold or unusually pale reconstructed breast, or sudden shortness of breath. Early changes in blood flow can need rapid assessment. Follow wound, drain, and activity instructions while waiting for review.
