Short answer

Muscle relaxants may ease selected spasms for a limited period, but they can cause drowsiness and need careful prescribing.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How muscle relaxants work

These medicines reduce muscle activity through effects on the nervous system or on the muscle itself. They may be considered when a painful spasm limits movement, such as a back muscle spasm, but they do not correct every cause of pain. A muscle relaxant can also make you sleepy, dizzy, less alert, or unsteady.

Alcohol, sleeping medicines, opioid pain medicines, and some allergy medicines can add to sedation. The exact medicine matters, so never share tablets or use someone else’s prescription. Some products require gradual reduction rather than sudden stopping.

Using them safely

Take the prescribed dose and timing, and check whether you should avoid driving, cycling, heights, or machinery until you know your response. Tell the prescriber about pregnancy, liver or kidney disease, breathing problems, falls, and every medicine or supplement you take. Combine medication with the movement advice or physiotherapy plan recommended for the underlying problem.

If a dose is missed, follow the medicine’s instructions rather than doubling the next dose. Keep it secured and ask the prescriber how long it is intended to be used.

Warning signs

Get emergency help for extreme sleepiness, slow or difficult breathing, collapse, severe confusion, or an allergic reaction with swelling of the face or throat. Seek prompt assessment for new weakness, numbness, trouble walking, or loss of bladder or bowel control with back pain. Persistent cramps or spasms deserve review when they keep returning, spread, or interfere with sleep and daily activity.

Questions for your doctor

What is causing the spasm? How long should I use this medicine? Which activities and medicines should I avoid? What side effects require a call? Should I taper it? What exercise or other treatment supports recovery?

Questions people ask

Can I drink alcohol while taking a muscle relaxant?

Avoid combining them unless a clinician who knows your prescription specifically advises otherwise, because sedation and breathing problems may increase.

Do muscle relaxants cure muscle cramps?

They may reduce spasm in selected situations, but the cause of recurring cramps still needs assessment.
