What does slightly turbid urine mean?

Turbidity describes how much light passes through a urine sample. Mild cloudiness can result from crystals, mucus, skin cells, concentrated urine or a sample that was not collected cleanly. White blood cells, bacteria or blood can also alter clarity. The appearance does not show which explanation applies.

Pain or burning with urination, urgency, frequent trips to the toilet or lower abdominal discomfort can occur with a urinary tract infection. Fever, chills, nausea or pain near the ribs or back raises concern for kidney involvement. Difficulty starting or completing urination can have another urinary cause, including benign prostate enlargement.

Review the other report fields and follow the collection instructions if a repeat sample is requested. A clean midstream sample in a suitable container helps limit cells from the skin. Maintain normal fluid intake unless your clinician has advised a restriction. Persistent symptoms or additional abnormalities may require microscopy, culture or examination.

Seek medical advice for ongoing turbidity with pain, blood, unusual smell, fever or urinary difficulty. Get urgent care for fever with flank pain, vomiting, confusion, severe weakness or inability to pass urine. If you are pregnant or have kidney disease, contact a clinician sooner when urinary symptoms appear.
