What does a hazy urine test appearance mean?

Haze means the sample is not completely clear. White blood cells, bacteria, mucus, crystals, skin cells or semen can make urine look cloudy. A sample that sits for a while may also change in appearance. Haze alone cannot identify the cause, so clinicians read it alongside the dipstick, microscopy, culture and your symptoms.

Burning when passing urine, frequent urges, lower abdominal discomfort or an unusual smell can occur with a urinary tract infection. Fever, chills or pain in the side or back can point to a kidney infection and need prompt assessment. In men, difficulty emptying the bladder may occur with benign prostate enlargement.

Check whether the report also lists blood, protein, white cells, nitrites or bacteria. Follow the instructions from the clinic about repeating the sample; a clean, midstream sample reduces contamination. Drink fluids normally unless a clinician has restricted them, and do not start leftover antibiotics. A clinician may request a culture or another urine test when symptoms or abnormal findings persist.

Arrange medical advice promptly for painful urination, repeated urgency, visible blood, fever, chills, vomiting, or pain in your back or side. Seek urgent help if you feel very unwell, become confused, cannot keep fluids down or cannot pass urine. Pregnancy, childhood, older age, kidney disease or a weakened immune system lowers the threshold for contacting a clinician.
