Turbid urine test appearance: what it means

Cloudiness is a visual finding, not a diagnosis. White blood cells, red blood cells, crystals, protein, mucus, or bacteria can change the appearance. A sample left standing, collected without cleaning the area, or mixed with vaginal discharge can also look cloudy. Concentrated urine may appear less clear without indicating infection.

The dipstick and microscopic examination add useful detail. Nitrites, white blood cells, blood, protein, and crystals are interpreted alongside symptoms. Turbid urine with burning, urgency, or frequent urination can fit a [Urinary Tract Infection](/conditions/urinary-tract-infection/), but the appearance alone cannot identify the cause.

Read the complete report rather than relying on the appearance line. Follow the collection instructions if a repeat sample is requested: use the supplied container, avoid touching its inside, and deliver it within the instructed time. Tell the clinician about urinary symptoms, menstruation, discharge, recent exercise, and medicines.

Arrange assessment for visible blood, persistent cloudy urine, new pain, or difficulty passing urine.
