Urine Pregnancy Test Strip: What the Result Means

Human chorionic gonadotropin, often called hCG, rises after an embryo attaches to the womb lining. A strip is designed to detect this hormone in a urine sample, usually by dipping the absorbent end into a clean container or holding it in the urine stream, depending on the product instructions.

A control line shows that the test has worked. A second test line, even if faint and read within the stated time window, can indicate hCG has been detected. No control line means the result is invalid and the strip should not be interpreted as positive or negative.

A negative result can occur when the test is taken very early, urine is diluted, or the instructions were not followed precisely. Check the expiry date and read the result only during the time window printed on the package; changes that appear later may be evaporation marks rather than a true test line.

Follow the package instructions for the sample, dipping time, and reading time. Testing with concentrated urine, such as the first urine after waking, may help when testing early. If the result is negative but your period does not start or pregnancy symptoms continue, repeat the test after a short interval or arrange a clinical pregnancy test.
