Urine leaking at night in men: what to know

Short answer
Urine leaking at night in men may reflect bladder control problems, prostate symptoms, infection, medicines, or another health condition, so a new or recurring pattern deserves medical assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Common patterns
- Bedwetting, urgency-related leakage, or dribbling after urination
- Useful preparation
- Keep a short bladder diary before your appointment
- Urgent warning
- Inability to pass urine needs urgent medical help
What nighttime leaking can mean
Nighttime leakage can happen when the bladder stores urine poorly, the muscles that hold urine are weak or overactive, or getting to the toilet is difficult. Waking to pass urine and wetting the bed are different patterns, although they can occur together.
An enlarged prostate can narrow the urine pathway and cause a weak stream, difficulty starting, dribbling, urgency, or frequent night-time urination. A urinary tract infection may cause burning, urgency, cloudy or strong-smelling urine, or lower abdominal discomfort. Type 2 diabetes can increase urine production when blood glucose is high. Obesity, dementia, reduced mobility, sleep problems, and some medicines may also contribute. These conditions can present with urinary symptoms; leaking urine alone does not identify the cause.
What to do next
Arrange a primary-care appointment if the leakage is new, repeats, or interferes with sleep or daily life. Before the visit, record when you drink, when you urinate, leakage episodes, urgency, stream changes, pain, fever, and your medicines. A clinician may ask about bowel habits, mobility, sleep, thirst, and previous prostate or urinary problems. Assessment can include an examination, urine testing, and other checks guided by your symptoms.
Until you are assessed, avoid large drinks close to bedtime while keeping normally hydrated during the day. Reduce evening caffeine and alcohol if they worsen urgency, empty your bladder before sleep, keep the route to the toilet clear, and use absorbent protection if needed. Do not stop prescribed medicines or sharply restrict fluids without medical advice.
When to seek urgent care
Seek urgent medical help for inability to pass urine, severe lower abdominal pain, blood in the urine, fever with back or side pain, confusion, or sudden weakness or numbness. Contact a clinician promptly for painful urination, fever, rapidly worsening symptoms, marked thirst with frequent urination, or repeated wetting after a long period of being dry.
Questions for your doctor
Ask: What pattern of leakage do my symptoms suggest? Could my prostate, urine infection, blood glucose, sleep, mobility, or medicines be contributing? Which tests do I need? What changes should I try first, and how will we review whether they help?

Questions people ask
Is urine leaking at night in men always a prostate problem?
No. Prostate symptoms are one possible cause, but infection, bladder changes, diabetes, sleep, mobility, medicines, and other conditions can also contribute.
Should I stop drinking fluids before bed?
Avoiding large drinks close to bedtime may help, but maintain normal hydration during the day and do not severely restrict fluids without medical advice.
What information should I bring to an appointment?
Bring a list of medicines and a record of drinks, urination, leakage, urgency, pain, fever, stream changes, and any unusual thirst.
