What should you know about white and cloudy urine?

Cloudiness may result from crystals, mucus, cells or concentrated urine, and a single sample can look different from the next. A urinary tract infection can cause cloudy urine with burning, urgency, frequent small amounts or lower abdominal discomfort. Kidney infection can add fever, chills, nausea or pain in the side or back. In some people, semen or vaginal discharge can mix with urine and make it appear white. The appearance alone cannot distinguish these causes.

Notice whether the cloudiness repeats and record burning, urgency, odour, discharge, fever or pain. Drink your usual fluids unless you have been given a restriction, and avoid leftover antibiotics because the right treatment depends on the cause. Arrange a clinical review when cloudiness persists, returns, or comes with urinary symptoms. A clean urine sample may help identify infection or crystals.

Seek urgent medical care for cloudy urine with fever, shaking chills, vomiting, pain in the back or side, confusion, fainting, pregnancy, or feeling rapidly worse. Inability to pass urine, visible blood or severe pain also needs prompt assessment. A kidney infection can become serious if treatment is delayed, so do not wait for symptoms to settle when fever and flank pain occur together.
