What should you know about very dark orange urine?

A small amount of fluid, sweating, vomiting or diarrhoea can make urine more concentrated and deepen yellow-orange tones. Vitamins, medicines and strongly coloured foods can also alter its appearance. Orange-brown urine with yellow eyes or skin, pale stools, itching, nausea or discomfort under the right ribs may reflect bilirubin and should be assessed. Cloudiness, pain when passing urine or fever points toward a urinary problem rather than colour alone. Looking at the whole pattern is more useful than judging one sample.

Review recent fluids, heat, illness, exercise, foods, vitamins and medicines. If you feel well and can drink normally, take regular fluids and check the next few samples. Do not force fluids if a clinician has told you to restrict them. Contact a clinician if the orange colour lasts, keeps returning, or comes with pain, fever, vomiting, itching, yellowing or reduced urine. Bring a list of medicines and supplements to the appointment.

Get urgent help for orange urine with yellow skin or eyes, confusion, fainting, severe abdominal or back pain, fever with chills, repeated vomiting, very little urine or inability to pass urine. After prolonged heat exposure, dizziness, headache, nausea, weakness or unusual sweating warrants prompt care for possible heat exhaustion. Seek urgent assessment if urine becomes red or cola-like or you feel suddenly very unwell.

Ask whether the colour could be caused by a medicine, dehydration or bilirubin; whether urine, liver or kidney tests are needed; how much fluid is suitable for you; and which changes should trigger urgent review.
