What should you know about urine fungal culture test?

The laboratory places the urine in conditions that allow fungi to grow and then identifies any growth. A result may be negative, show a specific fungus, or be difficult to interpret because the sample was contaminated or organisms are present without causing illness.

The result is not read alone. Burning, fever, urgency, flank pain, catheter use, recent antibiotics, diabetes, immune suppression and urinary procedures can change how a clinician interprets it. A positive culture does not automatically prove that every symptom is caused by an active infection.

Follow the collection instructions closely. Clean the area as directed, collect the midstream portion if requested, avoid touching the inside of the container and deliver it within the stated timeframe. Tell the clinician about antifungal medicines, antibiotics, catheters and urinary devices.

Treatment depends on symptoms, the organism, the collection quality and your health. Do not start leftover antifungal medicine. If treatment is prescribed, take it exactly as directed and report side effects or symptoms that fail to improve. Oral antifungal treatment may be discussed when a clinician confirms it is appropriate.

Contact a clinician promptly for fever, chills, back or flank pain, vomiting, confusion, worsening urinary pain, inability to pass urine or visible blood. These symptoms can signal a urinary problem requiring timely assessment.

People with a catheter, pregnancy, kidney disease or reduced immunity should ask when to report symptoms and whether repeat testing is needed. A laboratory result should be matched to the clinical picture rather than acted on without guidance.

Ask why the culture was ordered, how the sample should be collected, whether the result shows contamination or infection, when it will be available, and what symptoms should trigger urgent review. Ask whether other urine or blood tests are needed.
