Why Is Urine Dark Yellow?

Dark yellow urine commonly reflects concentrated urine, but the shade, duration and accompanying symptoms determine whether further assessment is needed. Urine often becomes lighter after normal fluid intake. Strong yellow colour can also follow vitamin supplements or some medicines, so consider what has changed recently.

Dehydration is more likely after sweating, exercise, heat, fever, diarrhoea, vomiting, or simply drinking less than usual. Heat exhaustion may add headache, dizziness, nausea, weakness and heavy sweating. Dark yellow that progresses to brown or tea-coloured urine, especially with yellow eyes or pale stools, needs assessment for possible liver inflammation such as hepatitis A or hepatitis B. Burning, urgency, pelvic pain, fever, or blood points toward a urinary problem and should not be explained by colour alone.

Drink fluids regularly unless you have been told to restrict them, and see whether urine becomes lighter over the next several bathroom visits. Avoid using colour as your only measure of hydration; thirst, dry mouth, dizziness and reduced urination also matter. Keep a note of supplements, medicines, heat exposure and symptoms. Book a review if dark yellow urine persists, repeatedly returns, or does not improve with normal hydration.

Seek prompt care for fever, flank pain, painful urination, vomiting, yellow skin or eyes, severe weakness, confusion, fainting, or very little urine. After heat exposure, urgent evaluation is needed if you cannot drink, feel confused, or are becoming faint. Brown, red, or cola-coloured urine deserves timely assessment even if you have no pain.

Ask whether your medicines or supplements could alter urine colour and whether a urine test is appropriate. Tell the clinician how long the change has lasted, whether it lightens with fluids, and whether you have pain, fever, itching, yellowing, or bowel-colour changes. Ask what worsening signs require urgent attention.
