A urine culture test in pregnancy checks a urine sample for bacteria so a clinician can identify infection and choose appropriate treatment. Pregnancy can make urinary infection less obvious, so testing may be arranged even when symptoms are mild or absent. The sample is examined in a laboratory, and the result can show whether bacteria are present and which medicines may work against them.

A negative culture means the laboratory did not find significant bacterial growth in the sample. A positive result may indicate a urinary tract infection, including bacteria without typical burning or urgency. Contamination can occur if skin bacteria enter the container, so an unexpected result may need discussion or a repeat sample. A urinary tract infection can sometimes move upward and cause a kidney infection, which is more serious during pregnancy.

Follow the collection instructions carefully. Wash your hands, begin urinating into the toilet, collect the midstream urine in the sterile container, and close it without touching the inside. Return it promptly as instructed. Tell the clinician about antibiotics or urinary symptoms, because recent medicine can affect the result. If bacteria are found, take the prescribed antibiotic treatment exactly as directed and complete the planned follow-up.

Contact your maternity or medical team promptly for fever, chills, pain in the side or back, vomiting, feeling faint, or worsening illness. Burning urine, frequent urges, blood in the urine, or lower abdominal discomfort also deserve timely assessment in pregnancy. Seek urgent help if you feel severely unwell, cannot keep fluids down, or develop confusion or breathing difficulty.

Ask why the culture was requested, when the result is expected, whether the sample was adequate, and what the next step is if bacteria are detected. You can also ask whether a repeat urine test is needed, which symptoms should trigger same-day advice, and whether any prescribed medicine is suitable for your stage of pregnancy.
