Urine amber color and cloudy appearance

Deep yellow or amber urine can occur when the body has less fluid available, making urine more concentrated. Cloudiness may come from crystals, mucus, cells, or other material mixed into the urine. A strong smell, burning, frequent urination, lower abdominal discomfort, or fever makes a urinary infection more concerning. A kidney infection can cause fever, chills, side or back pain, nausea, and feeling unwell. Appearance alone cannot identify the cause.

If you otherwise feel well, drink fluids regularly and observe the next few times you urinate. Do not force large amounts if a clinician has limited your fluids. Notice the color, smell, pain, frequency, and any fever. A clinician may request a clean-catch urine sample to check for blood, infection, crystals, or other findings. Do not start leftover antibiotics; treatment depends on the cause.

Arrange medical advice if the cloudiness continues, keeps returning, or occurs with burning, urgency, blood, or trouble passing urine. Seek urgent care for fever with side or back pain, vomiting, confusion, severe pain, or marked weakness, because these can signal a kidney infection or another problem needing prompt treatment.

Ask whether your symptoms fit dehydration, a urinary tract infection, or a kidney problem; whether you need urine testing; and which changes should prompt urgent review.
