What should you know about urinary bladder resection?

Short answer

Urinary bladder resection removes abnormal tissue through surgery, allowing the team to examine it and plan further care when needed.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Route
Often through the urethra using a slender instrument
Purpose
Remove tissue and provide a specimen for examination

Understanding the procedure

A common approach is transurethral resection: a slender instrument passes through the urethra into the bladder, so there is no cut through the abdominal skin. The surgeon removes visible tissue and sends it for laboratory examination. The report can show the tumour type, grade, and depth of growth, including whether muscle is present in the sample.

A urinary catheter is often left temporarily so urine can drain while the bladder settles. Burning, urgency, or blood in the urine can occur during recovery. Resection may be the only treatment needed for some tumours, while others need another procedure, bladder medicine, or a wider treatment plan.

Getting ready and recovering

Tell the surgical team about blood-thinning medicines, allergies, urinary infections, and previous anaesthetic problems. Follow the instructions about fasting and medicines. Afterward, drink according to the advice you receive, avoid strenuous activity until cleared, and monitor urine flow. Keep the catheter and drainage equipment clean if you go home with one, and make sure you know when it should be removed.

When to seek urgent help

Contact the clinical team promptly for inability to pass urine, clots that stop drainage, increasing bleeding, fever, chills, worsening pain, or feeling faint. A blocked catheter or infection needs assessment rather than waiting for the next appointment.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which technique is planned, whether muscle was included in the specimen, when pathology will be ready, and whether repeat resection or bladder treatment may be advised. Discuss catheter care, activity limits, and the symptoms that require urgent contact.

Questions people ask

Will bladder resection remove the whole bladder?

Usually it refers to removing tumour through the urethra; removing the whole bladder is a different operation.

Why might another treatment be needed?

The tissue report may show features that require additional bladder treatment, another resection, or treatment aimed beyond the bladder.
