What should you know about urinalysis in pregnancy?

Pregnancy can make urinary symptoms less obvious, so urine testing may be part of routine antenatal care or used when symptoms develop. The sample can be checked for signs of a urinary tract infection, glucose, blood, and protein. Protein may be temporary, but persistent protein together with raised blood pressure, headache, vision changes, or sudden swelling needs prompt assessment for pregnancy-related complications. A positive infection screen may lead to a culture because the exact bacteria and suitable antibiotic matter in pregnancy. One result is interpreted alongside symptoms, blood pressure, gestation, and other tests.

Follow the clinic's instructions and provide a clean-catch sample if requested. Tell the maternity team about burning, urgency, fever, side pain, vaginal bleeding, discharge, medicines, and any previous urine infections. Do not start, stop, or borrow antibiotics without pregnancy-specific medical advice. If a repeat sample or culture is requested, complete it even when symptoms settle. Keep antenatal appointments because urine findings can be meaningful before you feel unwell.

Contact your maternity team promptly for fever, chills, pain in the side or back, vomiting, painful urination, visible blood in urine, or feeling unusually unwell. Seek urgent assessment for a severe headache, visual disturbance, sudden swelling of the face or hands, severe upper abdominal pain, confusion, collapse, or difficulty breathing. These symptoms should be assessed without waiting for a urine result.
