Uric Acid and Swollen Hands: What to Know

Gout occurs when urate crystals trigger inflammation in a joint or nearby tissues. It can affect the fingers, knuckles, or wrist, with pain, warmth, tenderness, and swelling that may begin suddenly. A high uric acid result alone does not show that gout is the cause of hand swelling.

Rheumatoid arthritis can also present with swollen, painful, stiff hand joints, often affecting more than one area. An injury, including a wrist fracture, may cause swelling after a fall or impact. The timing, distribution, warmth, movement, skin changes, and examination findings help guide the assessment.

Arrange a medical review if swelling is unexplained, keeps returning, affects both hands, or makes gripping difficult. Photographing the swelling and recording pain, stiffness, recent injury, fever, and food or medicine changes can help. Remove tight rings early, rest the hand, and keep it comfortably elevated while arranging advice. Avoid squeezing or massaging a hot painful joint, and do not treat a uric acid result without discussing the wider picture.

Seek urgent assessment when hand swelling follows a significant injury, the fingers look misshapen, or you cannot move them normally. A red or hot swollen hand with fever, rapidly increasing pain, skin discoloration, numbness, or a cold finger also needs prompt care because infection, circulation problems, or a fracture may need urgent treatment.

Ask whether the pattern fits gout, rheumatoid arthritis, injury, or another cause; whether you need imaging or blood tests; and how to protect hand function while symptoms settle. Ask which warning signs should send you to urgent care.
