Upper Lip Sore and Swollen: What to Know

Soreness and swelling may follow a bite, bump, cracked skin, cold sore, dental problem, or irritation from a cosmetic or oral-care product. Sudden swelling can also be angioedema, an allergic-type reaction that may occur with or without hives. Infection becomes more concerning when warmth, redness, pus, fever, or worsening pain develops. The speed of onset, visible blisters or wounds, and symptoms elsewhere help a clinician decide what needs treatment.

Stop any new product that touched the area and rinse gently if chemical irritation is possible. Use a cool compress wrapped in clean cloth for short periods, keep the skin clean, and avoid squeezing, scratching, or applying unprescribed creams inside the mouth. Note recent foods, medicines, stings, dental work, and cosmetic treatments. If the swelling is mild but does not improve, arrange a medical or dental assessment to identify the cause.

Call emergency services immediately for swelling of the tongue or throat, trouble breathing, wheezing, faintness, confusion, or difficulty swallowing. Seek urgent assessment for rapidly increasing swelling, widespread hives, fever, pus, severe pain, spreading redness, or swelling around the eye. A sore that does not heal, repeatedly returns, or forms a persistent crust also deserves clinical review.

Tell the clinician when the swelling began and ask whether the pattern suggests irritation, infection, dental disease, or angioedema; whether any medicine or product should be avoided; and what action to take if the swelling returns.
