What should you know about upper diastasis recti?

Short answer
Upper diastasis recti is a gap between the upper abdominal muscles that can affect core support and movement after pregnancy.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What upper diastasis recti means
The connective tissue between the two sides of the rectus abdominis can become stretched, allowing the muscles to sit farther apart. The upper area is above the navel, although separation can extend along more of the midline. You may notice a ridge or doming when sitting up, reduced trunk control, back discomfort, or a feeling that your abdomen is less supported. Its appearance alone does not show how much support your core provides.
What you can do
A clinician or physiotherapist can assess your abdominal wall, breathing pattern, posture, and movements that bring on doming. Begin with gentle, coordinated breathing and controlled activation of the deep abdominal muscles rather than forceful crunches. Roll to your side before getting out of bed and avoid breath-holding while lifting. Postnatal physiotherapy can provide a staged programme suited to healing, activity, and any pelvic-floor symptoms.
When to seek care
Arrange an assessment if the separation is painful, limits lifting or exercise, or is accompanied by persistent back or pelvic pressure. Seek prompt medical care for a new, very tender bulge, severe abdominal pain, vomiting, or skin changes over a swelling, because these features need a different assessment.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the pattern is consistent with diastasis recti, which movements to modify, and how to progress strengthening. You can also ask whether a hernia, pelvic-floor problem, or another cause of pain should be checked.

Questions people ask
Can upper diastasis recti cause a ridge?
A ridge or doming may appear when the abdominal wall is loaded, such as during a sit-up or getting out of bed.
Should I stop all exercise?
Not usually. Modify movements that cause pain or pronounced doming and build activity gradually with professional guidance.
