What should you know about upper arm compression sleeve?

After lymph nodes or nearby tissues are affected by cancer treatment, fluid can collect in the arm. A sleeve provides graduated pressure that can support movement of this fluid and reduce the feeling of heaviness for some people. It is part of a plan, not a substitute for finding the cause of new swelling.

The correct pressure, length, fabric, and fit depend on your arm shape, skin, circulation, activity, and the location of swelling. A sleeve that rolls, wrinkles, pinches, or leaves a deep edge may irritate skin or restrict comfort.

Have a lymphoedema clinician or trained fitter measure you and show you how to put it on without pulling or twisting the fabric. Check your fingers, hand, and arm after wearing it for colour change, numbness, tingling, pain, or increased swelling. Keep the garment clean, dry, and free from snags; follow its care instructions and replace it when the fabric loses its fit.

Moisturise dry skin when the sleeve is off, allowing the product to absorb before dressing. Do not cut, fold, or modify the sleeve. Lymphoedema therapy may also include skin care, movement, and other techniques selected for your needs.

Remove the sleeve and contact your care team if it causes new pain, numbness, pins and needles, coldness, blue or pale fingers, marked tightness, or swelling that worsens while wearing it. Seek urgent help for sudden arm swelling with chest pain or breathlessness. Ask for prompt assessment if the skin becomes hot, red, tender, or rapidly more swollen, because infection may need treatment.
