What should you know about an unremarkable abdominal ultrasound?

Ultrasound uses sound waves to create pictures of structures such as the liver, gallbladder, bile ducts, pancreas, spleen, kidneys, and major abdominal vessels. ‘Unremarkable’ is reporting language that says the sonographer or radiologist did not identify a notable abnormality in the structures visible during that examination. It is reassuring, but it is not a guarantee that every cause of pain or digestive symptoms has been excluded. Bowel gas, body position, the area scanned, and the question the test was designed to answer can limit what is seen. Some problems, including certain types of hernia or early inflammation, may need examination, blood tests, or another scan.

Match the report with your symptoms and the reason the scan was ordered. If discomfort, nausea, altered bowel habits, or unexplained weight change continues, book a GP Consultation to review the full picture. Bring the report and a list of medicines, and note where symptoms occur, what brings them on, and whether meals affect them. Depending on the findings, a clinician may consider blood or urine tests, a different imaging study, or treatment aimed at the symptoms. An unremarkable result does not mean the symptoms are imagined.

Seek urgent medical help for sudden severe abdominal pain, a rigid or swollen abdomen, repeated vomiting, fainting, black or bloody stools, yellowing of the skin, high fever with worsening pain, or inability to pass urine. Pain radiating to the back with vomiting may need prompt assessment for pancreatitis. Severe colicky pain or blood in the urine can occur with kidney stones, while right-sided groin swelling may indicate an inguinal hernia that needs examination.

Ask which organs were adequately visualised, whether the report answers the original clinical question, and what alternative causes fit your symptoms. Clarify whether you need repeat examination, blood tests, or another scan, and which changes should lead you to seek urgent help.
