What should you know about undulating fever causes?

Fever changes as the body adjusts its temperature during an immune response. The pattern can be shaped by the infection, the time of day, medicines, hydration, and how temperature is measured. Chills, sweating, cough, stomach symptoms, urinary symptoms, rash, or pain help narrow the possibilities.

Brucellosis can produce a fluctuating fever after exposure to infected animals or unpasteurised dairy products. Other infections, including respiratory or skin infections, may also cause fever but usually bring their own local symptoms. A clinician may ask about travel, food, animals, work, medicines, and illnesses around you.

Record readings using one thermometer and method, noting when the fever rises, how long it lasts, and what happens between episodes. Write down medicines, fluid intake, new symptoms, travel, and animal or food exposures. Rest and drink regularly. Do not start antibiotics left from an earlier illness; the right treatment depends on the cause.

Arrange medical assessment for recurrent fever, fever that does not settle, or symptoms after a high-risk exposure. Seek urgent help for confusion, breathing difficulty, collapse, seizure, severe dehydration, stiff neck with severe headache, or a rapidly spreading rash. Pregnancy, infancy, older age, and reduced immunity lower the threshold for prompt advice.
