Underarm itching and darkening: what to know

New deodorant, fragrance, shaving, tight clothing, and friction may irritate the fold. Scratching and ongoing inflammation can leave darker colour after the itch settles. Warm, moist skin folds can also support a yeast infection, especially when there is redness, soreness, or a defined edge. Pause newly introduced deodorants, fragranced products, and harsh scrubs. Wash gently, rinse well, pat dry, and choose loose breathable clothing. Try not to scratch or shave over broken skin. Do not apply bleaching products, steroid mixtures, or antifungal treatment without checking that they fit the appearance; the wrong product can mask infection or worsen irritation. If darkening remains after the itch improves, a clinician can assess the cause before discussing pigment care.

Arrange a clinical review for spreading redness, warmth, pain, swelling, cracks, pus, a strong odour, fever, or a tender lump. Seek prompt help if swelling of the lips or face, breathing difficulty, or rapidly widespread hives accompanies the itch.
