Underarm Black Spots: Common Causes and Next Steps

Repeated shaving, friction, tight clothing, or fragranced deodorant can irritate underarm skin. After inflammation settles, extra pigment may remain even when bumps are gone. Folliculitis can cause tender red bumps around hairs that later leave darker marks. Ingrown hairs may create a similar cycle. Acne-like spots can also occur in the area, particularly where sweat, oil, and rubbing combine. The appearance alone cannot identify the cause; texture, itch, pain, scaling, and the pattern of change provide useful clues.

Wash gently, pat dry, and use a plain, fragrance-free moisturiser if the skin feels dry. Pause harsh scrubs, bleaching products, and picking. If shaving seems connected, use a clean razor, shaving gel, and light strokes, or discuss another hair-removal method with a professional. Treat active bumps rather than only the leftover colour. A clinician can distinguish pigment after inflammation from an ongoing condition and may recommend a targeted topical treatment.

Book an assessment if spots are spreading, changing quickly, bleeding, persistently itchy, painful, scaly, or associated with a lump or repeated boils. Seek prompt care for fever, rapidly worsening redness, or marked tenderness. A sudden, widespread darkening of skin or dark patches in several folds also deserves medical review, especially when accompanied by other new symptoms.
