What should you know about uncomplicated colonic diverticular disease?

Short answer

Uncomplicated colonic diverticular disease means small pouches in the colon are present without evidence of an acute complication, and symptoms should still be assessed in context.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the term means

These pouches are called diverticula. Many people have them without symptoms. When they are associated with ongoing bowel symptoms, a person may notice lower abdominal discomfort, bloating, altered bowel habits, or constipation. This is different from diverticulitis, in which a pouch becomes inflamed and pain is often more persistent. The label uncomplicated does not explain every cause of abdominal pain, so a clinician may consider other bowel conditions as well.

Practical next steps

Arrange a GP Consultation if symptoms are new, persistent, or changing. Keep a brief record of pain, bowel movements, food triggers, and any fever or vomiting. Drink fluids and increase fibre gradually if your clinician says this is suitable; a sudden large increase can worsen bloating. Regular movement can support bowel function. Do not start laxatives, antibiotics, or pain medicines repeatedly without advice, especially if pain is worsening.

When to seek care

Seek urgent medical help for severe or rapidly worsening abdominal pain, a swollen abdomen, repeated vomiting, faintness, confusion, inability to pass stool or gas, or significant rectal bleeding. Fever with marked tenderness also needs prompt assessment because it may indicate inflammation or another abdominal problem. If symptoms are mild but continue, book a routine review rather than relying on self-diagnosis.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether your symptoms fit diverticular disease, whether testing is needed, how quickly to adjust fibre, and which warning signs should change your plan. Ask how to manage constipation safely and whether Nutrition Counselling could help you build a comfortable eating pattern.

Questions people ask

Is diverticular disease the same as diverticulitis?

No. Diverticular disease describes pouches and related symptoms; diverticulitis refers to inflammation of a pouch and may need urgent assessment.

Can constipation occur with diverticular disease?

Yes, constipation or other bowel-habit changes can occur, but persistent symptoms deserve a clinical review.
