What should you know about unani cupping therapy?

Short answer
Unani cupping therapy uses cups to create suction on the skin, sometimes with small skin openings, and should be discussed with a qualified practitioner alongside care for the underlying problem.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What happens during cupping
In dry cupping, cups remain on intact skin while suction lifts the skin slightly. Wet cupping, sometimes called hijama, adds carefully controlled superficial skin cuts before suction is applied. The treatment can leave circular marks, tenderness, bruising, or temporary skin irritation.
Cupping may be offered for muscular tightness or discomfort, but it does not identify why pain started or repair every source of back symptoms. Persistent pain needs an assessment that considers movement, nerves, joints, and general health.
Before and after a session
Tell the practitioner about pregnancy, bleeding problems, diabetes, skin disease, reduced immunity, allergies, and every medicine or supplement you take, especially blood thinners. Do not place cups over infected, broken, numb, or recently injured skin. For wet cupping, confirm that sterile, single-use instruments and appropriate hand hygiene are used.
Afterward, keep treated areas clean and follow wound-care instructions. Gentle movement may be preferable to strenuous exercise until soreness settles. Cupping should complement, not replace, a diagnosis and rehabilitation plan.
When to get help
Seek medical advice for spreading redness, increasing warmth, pus, fever, worsening swelling, or pain that does not settle. Get urgent help for fainting, heavy bleeding, breathing difficulty, or new weakness or numbness. Back symptoms with loss of bladder or bowel control require urgent assessment.
Questions to ask
Ask whether your symptoms are suitable for cupping, which technique is proposed, how infection and bleeding risks will be reduced, what improvement to expect, and which exercises or treatments should continue.

Questions people ask
Can cupping treat a back muscle spasm?
It may be used for short-term muscular discomfort by some practitioners, but the cause of the spasm still needs assessment and appropriate care.
Is wet cupping suitable for everyone?
No. Bleeding risk, skin conditions, pregnancy, infection risk, and other health factors can change whether it is appropriate.
