What should you know about ulcerative colitis constipation symptoms?

Ulcerative colitis is often associated with diarrhoea, but inflammation in the rectum can create urgency, straining, a feeling of incomplete emptying, and small or hard stools. This pattern is sometimes called constipation-predominant ulcerative colitis. Pain, reduced food or fluid intake, reduced movement, and some medicines can also contribute.

Constipation during a flare should not automatically be treated as ordinary constipation. Trapped stool and inflamed tissue can coexist, and symptoms may overlap with a narrowing or another bowel problem. The pattern, bleeding, pain, and medication history help guide assessment.
