What should you know about a UIBC blood test?

UIBC stands for unsaturated iron-binding capacity. Transferrin is a blood protein that carries iron; UIBC reflects the spare carrying capacity that is not occupied by iron. The result is not interpreted on its own. A clinician may compare it with serum iron, total iron-binding capacity, transferrin saturation, ferritin, a full blood count and your symptoms.

Results can vary with iron intake, inflammation, liver problems, nutrition and other health conditions. A pattern of results may support iron deficiency, while a different pattern can occur when iron handling is altered by illness. The test does not identify one condition by itself.

Check whether you need to fast or pause any supplement before the sample; follow the laboratory or clinician's instructions rather than changing prescribed treatment yourself. Keep a note of fatigue, breathlessness, dizziness, bleeding, bowel changes and medicines, because these details help give the result context.

Your clinician may arrange further blood tests or look for a reason for an unusual iron pattern. Possible areas of discussion include Anaemia, Chronic Kidney Disease, Coeliac Disease, Crohn's Disease or other causes of inflammation, depending on your full assessment.

Arrange prompt medical advice for worsening breathlessness, fainting, chest discomfort, black or bloody stools, heavy unexpected bleeding, or marked weakness. Seek urgent help if severe symptoms develop suddenly or you feel unable to stay safe. A UIBC result should not delay assessment of a serious symptom.
