Typical Bed Bug Bites: What to Know

Bites may be red, swollen, itchy bumps on areas uncovered during sleep, such as the arms, legs, neck, or face. Some people notice marks soon after exposure, while others develop a delayed reaction or little visible response. A line or cluster can be a clue, but mosquitoes, fleas, mites, hives, and skin irritation can look similar.

Finding bites does not prove that bed bugs are present. Check mattress seams, bed frames, nearby furniture, and luggage for physical signs, and consider whether anyone else sharing the sleeping area has new itchy marks.

Wash the area gently, use a cool compress, and avoid scratching because broken skin can become infected. Wash and dry bedding and clothing using the hottest safe settings for the fabric, and arrange appropriate pest control for the room and nearby areas. A clinician may recommend oral antihistamine treatment for itch or topical corticosteroids for inflammation when suitable.

Get urgent help for difficulty breathing, swelling of the lips or tongue, faintness, or widespread rapidly developing hives. Arrange medical review when bites become increasingly painful, warm, swollen, or draining, or when fever develops. Persistent itching that disrupts sleep may also need a treatment plan.
